A prayer for the new year

God of the past, the present, and the future–

Here we stand–at the beginning of a new year. We have no idea what it holds for us.

We have hopes and dreams, but whether they will come to fruition is unknown.

Many of us are coming into this new year mourning losses: the loss of loved ones…jobs…a sense of security.

Many of us are coming into this new year exhausted and not sure how much longer we can keep on keeping on.

Many of us are coming into this new year scared and angry at the hatred and division that far too often is the language of politics.

We need healing, God. We need healers.

Help us have faith in the goodness of each other. Give us courage to trust.

But most of all, God, help us walk into this new year in the spirit of Love–a love that is patient and kind…that honors others…that rejoices in truth…that hopes and perseveres.

Let us live in the light of that Love whose birth we just celebrated…who walks with us daily…and whose return we look forward to.

Amen.
