At a book sale a few years ago, we picked up a little book titled Front Porch Tales by Philip Gulley. I had had it in my books for taking to retreats, but just got around to reading it myself.

It’s an easy read. The stories are quite short–good length for bathroom reading!

They’re identified in the subtitle as “stories of family, faith, laughter and love”–and that statement is true. They’re stories that are typical of any family–sometimes humorous, sometimes more serious. And Gulley has a point in telling each one, each one sharing some kind of a value illustration–although he doesn’t beat you over the head with any of them. They’re just short stories of people he’s known and lessons he’s learned, shared in a conversational way just like you’d swap stories sitting around on a front porch.

Take a few minutes…catch your breath…and sit with Philip Gulley on the front porch. You’ll be glad you did.
